Club History

O’In 1961 the South Australian Youth Centre’s Inc. formed an under 15 Cricket competition. Although this was done on short notice, the WYC quickly rallied to the cause and within one week Mr. Ray Roberts and Mr. Derek Howarth had recruited 12 players. Four matches were played (managed by Derek Howarth and umpired by Ken Noakes before the first Annual General Meeting was held. At this AGM the following were elected into office: Chairman – Derek Howarth, Secretary / Treasurer – Ken Noakes, Committee: Max Alexander, Bob Bailes, Jim Treagus, Mal Vardon and Jeff Irwin. John Norton was the first coach and Ron Alderman was assistant coach. This was a great year for the WYC as the team Captained by Graham Alexander with Vice-Captain Wayne Roberts, defeated Pennington in an exciting Grand Final.

In 1962 saw the introduction of our first senior cricket team into the Independent Central Cricket Association. In 1963 a second Under 15 team and an Under 13 team were formed.

In 1964 a second senior team was added into the Independent Central Cricket Association competition. In 1962 the SA Youth Centre’s Inc. disbanded its cricket and our junior teams were entered in the Woodville Association. The Woodville Association was disbanded in 1967 and the WYCCC then joined the Adelaide & Suburban Cricket Association until such time the schools took control of all junior crickets in about 1974.

The senior teams continued in the Independent Central Cricket Association and increased the number of teams to four. In the 1999/2000 cricket season with the collapse of the ICCA and our club joined the Adelaide Suburban Cricket Association.

Our clubs first Senior Premiership was by our “B” Grade captained by Phil Shaughnessy in the 1968/69 season. The first “A” Grade Premiership was in 1977/78 and captained by Robert Donaldson. The clubs games record holder Daryl Smith (with 321 games) took over the “A” Grade captaincy in the 1978/79 season to captain the team to a record 9 premierships. During our time in the Independent Central Cricket Association the club won 22 premierships in various grades and since joining the Adelaide & Suburban Cricket Association in the 1999/2000 season our club has won a further 4 senior premierships. The club currently conducts a very successful junior program which was reintroduced in 1993 with an under 13 junior team in the West Torrens School Boys Competition. In 1998/89 an under 15 team was added into the ICCA Junior Competition. The Club has currently 3 under 13 teams and one under 15 team and is currently looking at expanding the junior program by introducing another under13 team and an under17 team. Currently the two under 13 teams play in the West Torrens School Boys competition and one in the Western Suburbs Junior Competition. The Under 15 team currently plays in the Adelaide Turf Junior Cricket Association and has won 4 premierships since their reintroduction in 1998/99 season.

The WYC Cricket Club is indebted to many people for the success we have enjoyed, none more than the Hossack family. First Joe Hossack was a founding member, President in 1973/74 and long term committee member, while Mike Hossack was Secretary from 1972 to 2007, Craig Hossack being a Committee member for 30 years, Junior Coordinator from 1993 to 2005 and Steve Hossack Treasurer in 1980 to 1981 & 1983 to 1987, committee member and player. All are Life Members of the Club.
